October 3rd, 2008

Architectural Wonders
Wednesday October 15, 2008

Speaker Confirmed
Overture Center Confirmed
Coliseum Bar location is in question.

3:30 PM Tour of Overture Center in Madison
Tour guide and speaker. Scott Raether (Director of Operations for Novum)
Showcasing worldwide architectural structures designed and developed right here in our own back yard of Menomonee Falls, WI. Buildings like Overture Performance Center in Madison, WI, the Wrigley Building in Chicago, IL and Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL reflect the strength and beauty that can derive from glass and welded steel.

Architectural strategy was to achieve transparency by incorporating huge 17’wide by 9’ tall insulated glass panels into the design. Twelve glass suction cups were required to lift the huge low-iron and annealed units, each weighing approximately 2,000 pounds. The incredibly flat and transparent wall stands as one of the more dramatic curtain walls in America.

Introductions

Agenda:

Ben Newcomb presented the evening’s agenda. Discussion of each follows:

Weld TV Episode 2 (DVD):

Did not watch it but passed the DVD on to Tony Stute to utilize at his discretion with his students

Future Meetings/Events:

October 15 Architectural Wonders:

Tour of the Overture Center to begin at 3:30pm and is optional
Meeting to follow at Coliseum Bar at 5:30 pm.  The managers will be changing at the Coliseum Bar just prior to this meeting. The current manager would not guarantee us the room. Jim H. to follow up on securing the conference room.

We will extend an invitation to Iron Workers Union and the local Architectural Societies to increase attendance

New member night will be postponed until December’s meeting

Offer free meal to new members who show up

Each officer will call around 2-3 new members to personally invite them to the meeting

November 12 MATC Hands on Night:

Will start event at 5:00pm

Need to have people sign up ahead of time for catering

Intend to go with something simple like subs or box dinner and allow attendees to eat at their leisure in order to provide enough time for everyone to try out equipment. At the Milwaukee section’s Hands on Night a lot of people did not show up until close to the end of the event and did not have the opportunity to try equipment so we want ours to be more open

Rob S. to obtain Lincoln equipment and Bryan K. to work with a Miller rep. to supply Miller equipment

No formal presentation during this event

All students coming to the event will be free but they will have to sign up ahead of time

Plan to introduce a Weld Competition at this meeting

Details to be discussed and finalized at October’s Board meeting

Looking for Weld projects to display at the event

Website

Lochlan Masters will be setting up a website for us. The domain name will be http://awsmadison-beloit.org.

Section Library

First round of books obtained by Jim H. with the second round coming in Nov and then all will be turned over to Ben to be located at Badger Welding Supplies

Other Discussion

Next board meeting will be held Oct 29, 2008

We will not charge more for non AWS members to attend events to try and get more attendance and word of mouth

End Time: 7:30 pm
